 About Octavia

In Roman history, Octavia the Younger was born into a life of privilege and prominence. She was highly regarded and admired, but faced many challenges in life that included war, divorce, and loss of children. Octavia was the sister of first Roman Emperor Augustus and her great-uncle was Julius Caesar. Her third marriage, to Marc Antony, ended when he left her for Queen Cleopatra of Egypt.

In 35 B.C., Augustus accorded honors to Octavia previously unheard of for women in Rome. She was granted sacrosanctitas, meaning it was illegal to verbally insult her. She was made immune from tutela, the male guardianship which all women in Rome except for the Vestal Virgins were required to have. This meant they could freely manage their own finances. Octavia was one of the first women in Rome to have statues and portraits displayed of her en masse in public places. Source: Wikipedia
